Piano Roll Ragtime

Recordings

Repurposed

The late Warren Trachtman converted thousands of original piano roll recordings to MIDI. I was too late to seek his permission but as this site is established for charitable purposes I trust that he and his heirs will have no objectionto my offering my arrangements of his excellent work. During the Pandemic I aquired some new sample based instruments including two new Steel Drum ensembles and some marimbas which I have put to work with my long established combination of synthesized steel drum, sampled gamelan orchestra, synthesized marimba and vibraphone. These piano roll recordings date from 1917 onwards and were often recorded by the composer or a famous pianist and in some instances were recorded as duets with four hands on the keyboard.

Original Ragtime

Recordings

Ragtime appeared in sheet music in the 1890’s.

It originated from African American music including dances like the Cakewalk. Over the next twenty years it evolves and developed into Rags, dances, marches, novelties and even intermezzos. The selection of famous rags on this page were all published as sheet music in the early part of the twentieth century . For example Alexander's Ragtime Band was Irving Berlin's first hit in 1911 - it has few of the features found in most rags but enjoys some mild syncopation and has become an anthem of that era. By contrast A Bag of Rags was supposedly the unofficial theme tune for the Keystone Cops. Also included are three of Rudy Wiedoeft's saxophone novelties and Odeon which is actually a contemporaneous Brazilian tango.
