Symphonies

On New World Percussion

Orchestras

The Symphony is a classical musical form which  originated in Italy which originally comprised  three movements - fast slow and fast. It was  taken up in Northern Europe and developed,  refined and extended to four movements in the  following scheme: 1.    an opening sonata or allegro  2.     a slow movement, such as adagio  3.     a minuet or scherzo with trio  4.     an allegro, rondo, or sonata  The word comes from the Greek for harmony  and for a fuller technical exposition you might  try the Wikipedia Symphony page.  But from our point of view the important issue  is the musical form and the harmonies not the  specific instruments used. Our arrangements  are typically simpler because the emulations  which we use are capable of performing across  a wider range of octaves than the instruments  available to the original composers. Some of  our instruments such as the wood wind and  harp can also deliver greater volume than their  physical equivalents.  Obviously we loose some  of the tone and colour provided by particular  instruments but perhaps the bigger picture  becomes clearer.  One of our biggest challenges  was the Brass section and for the most part we  have resorted to the Vibraphone to cover this.
