Joseph Lamb’s

Rags:

Joseph Lamb was a self taught pianist who grew up in New Jersey. He met Scott Joplin in a music store in New York in 1907 when he was buying some of his and James Scott’s  sheet music. Joplin was clearly impressed because he helped with the arrangement of Lamb’s first published rag - Sensation. Our arrangements are drawn from the twelve rags published by Stark between 1908 and 1919 although there were any more unpublished works which emerged after his death in 1960. Lamb built on the approaches used by Joplin and Scott but brought his own individual  touches to his compositions. It is particularly interesting to compare his Ragtime Nightingale with Scott’s Ragtime Oriole. These arrangements all use Warren Trachtman’s MIDI recordings. They also all feature the same percussion ensemble of Marimba, Gamelan, Vibes and Steel Drums.
