ONE MAN BAND

How did it all start?

The origins of this website are my long standing interest in using computers to produce music. These go back to the original BBC computer with a MIDI interface and a Casio keyboard. A little later a visit to Denmark Street - the original tin pan alley in London saw me coming away with a Roland Sound Canvas and that was followed by the laborious transcription of Jelly Roll Morton piano pieces into MIDI notation; re- arranging the music for a small jazz band and composing the drum parts. Then the Internet came along and I discovered that lots of other people had taken on the transcription task and I started to collect their work. Some of this breached copyright but much of it was genuinely in the public domain and I published the collection on a website for some years.

Realistic Synthesiser Emulations Arrived

The Roland instruments were good and still form the core of the GM set but it was the arrival of affordable realistic software emulations of classic synthesizers such as the Moog and faster Desktop PC processors which led to the breakthrough to merchantable quality recordings. Our blog records much of what came next.

Why Donationware?

Changed personal circumstances and some frustration with the e-commerce software I was using led me to abandon the sale of my music and to offer it as Donationware. This meant that the website is much simpler because I was able to abandoned the use of clips. It has also meant that I can promote the site on Twitter using links to complete recordings and this has proved very effective in giving exposure to the less frequently visited parts of the site.

Band Master

I am an autodidact musician and webmaster - building my knowledge and skills progressively over the years. As related here and on the Blog which has built up over 10 years. I am also a Rotarian and as Club Treasurer I am also a Trustee of the registered charity: The Rotary Club of Croydon Whitgift Trust Fund which receives and administers all donations made to this site.
