Eubie Blake was contemporary with James Scottand Joseph Lamb but he grew up in Baltimore.Despite coming from a religious family his earlymusic career began playing piano in a bordelloand a so called “black and tan” club.He claimed to have composed Charleston Ragwhen he was 12 years old in 1899 but didn’tcommit it to paper until 1915 when he hadlearned to write music.We just have a few of his compositions here andone Pianola Roll recoding of him playing theWang Wang Blues as the basis for a percussionarrangement. But he is worth including becausehis subsequent career as a Broadway Showcomposer with Noble Sissle was so influential.The first Shuffle Along included numbers suchas I’m Just Mad About Harry.
