Eubie Blake’s

Ragtime

Eubie Blake was contemporary with James Scott  and Joseph Lamb but he grew up in Baltimore.  Despite coming from a religious family his early  music career began playing piano in a bordello  and a so called “black and tan” club.  He claimed to have composed Charleston Rag  when he was 12 years old in 1899 but didn’t  commit it to paper until 1915 when he had  learned to write music.  We just have a few of his compositions here and  one Pianola Roll recoding of him playing the  Wang Wang Blues as the basis for a percussion  arrangement. But he is worth including because  his subsequent career as a Broadway Show  composer with Noble Sissle was so influential.  The first Shuffle Along included numbers such  as I’m Just Mad About Harry.
