This work was composed for piano and wasinspired by an exhibition of Mussorgsky’s friendVictor Hartmann’s paintings shortly after hisuntimely death at the age of 39. The ten pictures are interspersed byPromenade sections which share a commontheme which is picked up and developed in thelater pictures. Some of the pictures are obviousbut the ballet was an egg based costumedesign, the hut was a clock and the gate adesign for a new gate.My recordings use Steel drums, vibraphone ,gamelan and marimba together with breathypan pipes which complete the oriental feel tothis arrangement of the piano recording byKatsuhiro Oguri.
