This work was composed for piano and was inspired by an exhibition of Mussorgsky’s friend Victor Hartmann’s paintings shortly after his untimely death at the age of 39. The ten pictures are interspersed by Promenade sections which share a common theme which is picked up and developed in the later pictures. Some of the pictures are obvious but the ballet was an egg based costume design, the hut was a clock and the gate a design for a new gate.My recordings use Steel drums, vibraphone , gamelan and marimba together with breathy pan pipes which complete the oriental feel to this arrangement of the piano recording by Katsuhiro Oguri.
