Sergei

Rachmaninoff

Last Great Russian Romantic?

Rachmaninoff was widely recognised as one of  the finest pianists of his day and a renowned   composer following on from Tchaikovsky and  Rimpsky-Korsakov.  Our new recordings include two solo piano  pieces, a rhapsody for two pianos and  movements from two of his piano concertos.  The solo pieces are arranged on our familiar  Steel Drums, Gamelan, Marimba combination  while for the Rhapsody we have left out the  gamelan but included a sustaining synthesizer.  For the second Concerto the Piano part is taken  by a Vibraphone and Marimba combination and  the Orchestra is comprised of our usual  combination of New World instruments. For the  first and third movements of the Third Concerto  the piano part is taken by Steel Drums  supported in the third by a sustaining  Synthesizer while the Marimba takes on all the  string parts in the orchestra. This combination  highlights the contrast between the brightness  of the piano with the more mellow  orchestration and seems to add to the dramatic  character of this piece.
