James Scott’s Rags:

James Scott age 17 got his start in the music business in a music store in Missouri demonstrating songs including his own early compositions. How the son of former slaves from rural Missouri acquired those skill s is not clear but his talent was clearly evident because  his first songs were published as sheet music the following year. He went on composing and publishing for the next twenty years. He often performed in cinemas accompanying silent movies with his exuberant and dramatic compositions.  Some of his initial songs are presented as marches and two steps but this soon moves to a confident series of Rags with few of the civic or entertainment opportunities open to Scott Joplin.
