Erik Satie
The eccentric café pianist
composer
Satie was Normandy bred but spent most of his
life in Paris and much of that living in small
rooms in Montmartre amongst the avant garde
artists with whom he associated.
His most well known music was composed for
piano and we have arranged it here on several
different combinations of Steel Drums,
Vibraphone, Gamelan, Harp and Marimba
depending on the different qualities of the
music. Satie declared himself to be a
phonometrician rather than composer and his
work and playing did not go down well with the
authorities at the Paris Conservatoire where he
was taught by Faure and Saint Saens amongst
others. However his work made a profound
influence on composers like Debussy and Ravel.
His radical intellectual approach to his art also
had a significant influence on other artists living
and working in Paris at the time.
Sarabandes No1, No2 and No3 are arranged
on Steel Drums, Vibraphone, Gamelan, Harp
and Marimba combination except for the third
where an Ocarina has been added and the Harp
has been dropped.

Gymnopedies Nos 1 - 3 are typical early works
rendered here on Steel Drums, Vibraphone,
Gamelan, Harp and Marimba combination that
emphasise the plangent tones and the bright top
notes.
Trois Gnossienes are sometimes considered to
be dances like the Sarabandes and Gymnopedies
but they are known to follow on from them -
arranged here on Vibraphone, Gamelan and
Marimba.
Gnossienne No 4 was published posthumously
but the original manuscript does exist and is
arranged here on Vibraphone, Gamelan for the
right hand and Gamelan, Steel Drum and
Marimba for the left. This produces a very
distinctive sound that seems to go well with this
piece.
Sonatina Bureaucratique is a later work and is
seen as a neo-classical piece with a formal
structure along the lines of Clementi’s Sonatina
with three movements and some development of
the themes and an underlying humorous intent.
It is arranged here on Steel Drums, Vibraphone,
Gamelan and Marimba to sparkling effect.
